Data Warehousing Summary Tables

Saved by uncleflo on June 27th, 2018.

This document discusses the creation and maintenance of "Summary Tables". It is a companion to the document on Data Warehousing Techniques. The basic terminology ("Fact Table", "Normalization", etc) is covered in that document. Summary tables are a performance necessity for large tables. MariaDB and MySQL do not provide any automated way to create such, so I am providing techniques here. (Other vendors provide something similar with "materialized views".) When you have millions or billions of rows, it takes a long time to summarize the data to present counts, totals, averages, etc, in a size that is readily digestible by humans. By computing and saving subtotals as the data comes in, one can make "reports" run much faster. (I have seen 10x to 1000x speedups.) The subtotals go into a "summary table". This document guides you on efficiency in both creating and using such tables.

Saved by uncleflo on February 10th, 2018.

CoinMarketCap reports on the trading activities of thousands of markets but does not directly sell any cryptocurrency. The best way to find where to buy is by looking on the markets section for the cryptocurrency. For example, to find where to buy Bitcoin, you can look at the markets section for Bitcoin. Market Capitalization is one way to rank the relative size of a cryptocurrency. It's calculated by multiplying the Price by the Circulating Supply.

A very useful, brief and summarizing lookup website. Data compression has been extremely useful to us over the years. Whether its a zip file containing images to be sent in a mail or a compressed data backup stored on a server, we use data compression to save valuable hard drive space or to make the downloading of files easier. There are compression formats out there which allow us to sometimes compress our data by 60% or more. Darwin Online: Introduction to Coral reefs

Saved by uncleflo on August 28th, 2012.

Coral reefs (1842) was Darwin’s first monograph. It addressed an immensely ambitious subject. It is perhaps second only to the Origin for its masterful deduction from observation, leading to the construction of a theory that if proved would exceed all previous attempts and virtually solve its subject. The power of Darwin’s monograph was well recognised by his contemporaries as a major scientific work. It was for this book and his monographs on barnacles that Darwin was awarded the Copley Medal by The Royal Society in 1864.

We all have different habits, good and bad, in the way that we learn. For example, you may find yourself copying things out when reading rather than summarising and writing notes in your own words. We also have different preferences for the ways that we learn best. For example, some people find it much easier to understand a concept if they discuss it, whilst others find it easier to understand if they are able to see a diagram that explains the concept. Understanding your learning approaches and preferences is very important if you are going to help yourself to learn better.
