3 Biases That Hijack Performance Reviews, and How to Address Them

When we talk about bias, we often tie it to acts of discrimination or prejudice. But according to cognitive science, everybody, by virtue of having a brain that’s constantly seeking efficiency, is biased in some way — and not all biases make us actively malicious. The key is how we manage our biases. While biases can affect any of an organization’s talent decisions, they can be especially harmful when it comes to diversity and inclusion efforts. And there is perhaps no setting that shapes careers, salaries, and lives like annual performance evaluations. In a recent performance management summit we ran with over 100 large organizations, 57% of them said they weren’t taking any actions to address bias in performance reviews. One reason why may be a lack of shared language: In order to address biases, you first have to be able to label them. Research has found that several biases come up again and again when managers are evaluating a team member.

Twitter is a popular social network where users can share short SMS-like messages called tweets. Users share thoughts, links and pictures on Twitter, journalists comment on live events, companies promote products and engage with customers. The list of different ways to use Twitter could be really long, and with 500 millions of tweets per day, there’s a lot of data to analyse and to play with. This is the first in a series of articles dedicated to mining data on Twitter using Python. In this first part, we’ll see different options to collect data from Twitter. Once we have built a data set, in the next episodes we’ll discuss some interesting data applications. Update July 2016: my new book on data mining for Social Media is out! Maltego Classic is a commercial version of Maltego which includes access to all Paterva's standard OSINT transforms. Maltego Classic allows users to visualise up to 10 000 pieces of information and the relationships between them. Maltego CE is the community edition of Maltego and is available for free for everyone after a quick registration. It offers the same functionality as Maltego Classic with a few limitations. CaseFile is Paterva's answer to the offline intelligence problem. Combining Maltego's fantastic graph and link analysis functionality this tool allows for analysts to examine links between offline data.

Het incident waarbij een bebloede passagier hardhandig van een vliegtuig van United Airlines werd gezet lokte stevige reacties uit op Twitter. Sommige gebruikers amuseerden zich zelfs met alternatieve slogans die verwijzen naar het incident. Intussen duiken er meerdere getuigenissen op van twitteraars die opmerken dat enkele kritische tweets over United intussen zijn verdwenen. Zelfs een vraag over de verwijdering raakte kort nadien vermist.

A few years ago, you could venture into some beneficent municipality and find — in the public garage, or the library car lot, or right in the middle of Main Street — a couple of plug-in electric vehicle (PEV) charging stations. These cities, along with college and corporate campuses, were demonstrating their commitment to preserving the environment, offering free power and prime parking to those citizens who were willing to spend a lot of extra money for a low-range, underpowered, unsexy vehicle. Those charger-augmented spots were often empty, simply because there weren’t enough PEVs on the road to fill them.
