What do you get when you put a stable operating system, an innovative desktop manager and plenty of eye candies together? You get nothing short of a beautiful and functional OS. Elive is a Debian-based Linux distro, customized with Enlightenment e17 desktop manager. It is designed with the aim of providing a stable, fully functional and beautiful operating system that can run with minimal hardware requirement. The current stable version is based on Debian-etch while the version that is under development is based on the recently released Lenny. Knowing the stability and versatility of Debian and the elegant and simplicity of Enlightenment, there are little things that Elive can go wrong.

Proud history, sure. But at ING we’re always more interested in what comes next. Looking at everything we do and asking: how do we make this better? How can we get it done faster? How can it be done more simply? It takes relentless curiosity, a spirit of open collaboration and a culture where new ideas are valued ahead of old conventions.

Part of the developer's life, is to strive for simplicity in every aspect of their work. When searching for solutions to common problems, you have the choice to lock yourself into all kinds of third party services and API's, or take the opportunity and develop the functionality yourself. In this week's tutorial, we are making a simple link sharing app. This app will give you the ability to instantly share any web page, with a single click of a bookmarklet in your bookmarks bar, and display it in a widget on your site. Note: This tutorial is quite old and doesn't work in PHP7 and above. We are keeping it online only as a reference.

This post describes OAuth 2.0 in a simplified format to help developers and service providers implement the protocol. The OAuth 2 spec can be a bit confusing to read, so I've written this post to help describe the terminology in a simplified format. The core spec leaves many decisions up to the implementer, often based on security tradeoffs of the implementation. Instead of describing all possible decisions that need to be made to successfully implement OAuth 2, this post makes decisions that are appropriate for most implementations.

Secure software development philosophy: Software should be secure by default. Tools should be simply yet comprehensively secure. Cryptography is fundamental to security.

This paper introduces a new cryptographic library, NaCl, and explains how the design and implementation of the library avoid various types of cryptographic disasters suffered by previous cryptographic libraries such as OpenSSL. Specifically, this paper analyzes the security impact of the following NaCl features: no data flow from secrets to load addresses; no data flow from secrets to branch conditions; no padding oracles; centralizing randomness; avoiding unnecessary randomness; extremely high speed; and cryptographic primitives chosen conservatively in light of the cryptanalytic literature.

Linux is known for having a great number of mature, useful command line utilities available out of the box in most distributions. Skilled system administrators can do much of their work using the built-in tools without having to install additional software. In this guide, we will discuss how to use the netcat utility. Often referred to as a Swiss army knife of networking tools, this versatile command can assist you in monitoring, testing, and sending data across network connections. We will be exploring this on an Ubuntu 12.04 VPS, but netcat should be available on almost any modern Linux distribution. Ubuntu ships with the BSD variant of netcat, and this is what we will be using in this guide. Other versions may operate differently or provide other options.

This page shows a very simple wxWidgets program that can be used as a skeleton for your own code. While it does nothing very useful, it introduces a couple of important concepts and explains how to write a working wxWidgets application. First, you have to include wxWidgets' header files, of course. This can be done on a file by file basis (such as wx/window.h) or using one global include (wx/wx.h) which includes most of the commonly needed headers (although not all of them as there are simply too many wxWidgets headers to pull in all of them). For the platforms with support for precompiled headers, as indicated by WX_PRECOMP, this global header is already included by wx/wxprec.h so we only include it for the other ones:

What's the main difference between a small local agency and a global agency powerhouse? Aside from their big fancy offices, hundreds of employees, and endless stream of employee perks, the answer boils down to one simple thing: clients. And not only the type and size of their clients, but also the sheer number of them. So with this in mind, you might be asking yourself: how can I get more clients for my agency?

I’ve had a lot of success in my 20 year software engineering career with developing cross platform ‘C’ and ‘C++’ code. At Backblaze, we just released the Mac beta version of our online backup service, so I thought it an apt time to discuss my 10 rules for writing cross-platform code. We develop an online backup product where a small desktop component (running on either Windows or Macintosh) encrypts and then transmits users’ files across the internet to our datacenters (running Linux.) We use the same ‘C’ and ‘C++’ libraries on Windows, Mac, and Linux interchangeably. I estimate it slows down software development by about 5 percent overall to support all three platforms. However, I run into other developers or software managers who mistakenly think cross platform code is difficult, or might double or triple the development schedules. This misconception is based on their bad experiences with badly run porting efforts. So this article is to quickly outline the 10 simple rules I live by to achieve efficient cross platform code development.

Back in June 2010, I published a blog post detailing how to perform Ajax file uploads from your HTML forms. The result worked pretty well, but there was still some room for browser vendors to make things even simpler for us. Turns out, they have. The specific improvement that made this possible is the FormData interface, first introduced in Safari 5, and later in Chrome 7 and Firefox 4.

A very useful, brief and summarizing lookup website. Data compression has been extremely useful to us over the years. Whether its a zip file containing images to be sent in a mail or a compressed data backup stored on a server, we use data compression to save valuable hard drive space or to make the downloading of files easier. There are compression formats out there which allow us to sometimes compress our data by 60% or more. I’ll run you through using some of these formats to compress and decompress files and directories on a Linux machine. We’ll cover the basic usage of zip, tar, tar.gz and the tar.bz2 formats. These are some of the most popular formats for compression used on Linux machines.
