Timber for Marine and Fresh Water Construction

https://scbrims.files.wordpress.com/2013/10/timber-for-marine-and-fresh-water.pdf

Saved by uncleflo on January 2nd, 2020.

The aim of this publication is to describe the use of timber for marine and fresh water constructional purposes. It indicates how timber can provide a solution to many of the problems confronting dock, harbour and river board engineers and others, concerned with water construction. With a knowledge of the hazards to which timber may be exposed, and careful selection of the species with the most appropriate properties for the job, a satisfactory and long lasting structure can be obtained at relatively low cost. The principle functions of marine and fresh water structures where timber is utilized and which are described here are:- (a) The prevention of erosion of the sea coast and of river and canal banks. (b) The construction of wharfs, jetties, docks and dock gates, and the protection of such structures by fendering and rubbing pieces. (c) The construction of marinas and yacht havens.

Saved by uncleflo on December 18th, 2019.

Most boats are different but they do tend to have one thing in common and that is that they have very few right angles or regular shaped compartments. There are usually very few boats that can take a ready-made refrigerator or freezer - you just have to make it yourself! We can supply a flat-pack set of ready-cut insulated panels to help you build a customised box. The panels (part number SCD00001AA), are covered on both sides with 2.5 mm plastic laminate of foodstuff quality and have 46 mm thick closed cell foam insulation in between. They are easy to cut and glue together using a polyurethane sealant or mould resistant silicone resulting in joints that are leak-proof but not totally inflexible. The kit consists of three insulation panels measuring 978 x 478 x 50 mm. Cover strips for the edges of the lid are included together with simple instructions.

Flying sailboats designed by SEAir - Mini Transat

https://www.seair-boat.com/foiling-sailboat/

Saved by uncleflo on October 28th, 2019.

In early 2017, the Mini 747 prototype was the first and is still the only offshore racing monohull that can stay steadily airborne. At 8 knots of wind, only the foils touch the water, which means that it can reach higher speeds in certain points of sailing than those of water displacing sailing yachts twice its size. Up until now the boat showcased SEAir’s expertise and our technological development laboratory, but we are now getting it ready to return to racing. It will race in the events of the Mini circuit, including the well-known single-handed Mini Transat, blazing the trail of foiling monohulls crossing the Atlantic in record time. Having gained experience on the 747, SEAir is now in a position to design the elder sisters of this forerunner, destined to beat records and take part in the top open, single-handed, rating or crewed races. Currently only sailing on certain circuits, foiling boats will naturally continue their ascension and end up sailing in all racing programmes.

The ultimate antifouling group test - Motor Boat & Yachting

https://www.mby.com/maintenance/tried-tested-antifoul-81351/8

Saved by uncleflo on July 24th, 2019.

Our antifouling paint test threw up some interesting results. At first glance the boards show a range of different results, but only when you investigate the product and why it performed how it did do you fully understand what has happened.
Firstly it shows that professional application paints seem to perform marginally better. The higher toxicity of the paint is deemed too risky for the public to handle, so perhaps that’s why it’s also more effective.
Rather more surprising is that, contrary to expectations, many of the paints performed better in the Mediterranean than in the UK, although as the variations in our UK results proved, that may not apply to other areas of the Med.
The muddy waters of the East Coast proved the most challenging with all the paints showing plenty of slime and the occasional patch of weed.
However, the big surprise for us was the relative success of the silicone paints in a static test that would usually have favoured soft or copolymer copper-based antifoulings.
When choosing a paint, it’s important to think about how much you’ll be using your boat, as some of the hard paints will perform so much better with regular usage, while if you only plan on pottering up a river occasionally, you might be better off by going for a soft self-eroding paint.
Armed with the results of this test, you should be able to make a more informed decision on what paint to use this season, even if you’re not bold enough to try the silicone alternative.

Using a Six stage water filtration system the EMWC reverse osmosis delivers unrivalled quality in water filtration. 1st Stage water filter 5 micron Polypropylene filter (life Span 6 months Approx). Removes all particles above 5 micron from the water supply this includes metals and general water sediment. 2nd Stage carbon water filter (life Span 6 months Approx). Removes, Herbicides, Pesticides, Trihalomethanes, Chlorine, Organic Chemcals, lead and aluminium. 3rd Stage 1 Micron Polypropylene water filter (life Span 6 months Approx). Removes all particles above 1 micron from the water supply this includes any remaining water sediment. 4th stage Membrane 50 gpd (life Span 18 months Approx). The membrane creates the finest filtration, the treated water is forced through the membrane and any un-pure water is discarded this is generally around 75 – 80% allowing through just pure filtered ater to enter the pressurised holding tank. 5th Stage In Line Activated Carbon water Filter (life Span 6 months Approx). Once the faucet is opened the water goes through a final carbon water filter that effectively polishes the water prior to your consumption. Six Stage Ultra Violet Filtration. our UV systems employ a low pressure mercury vapour discharge lamp surronded by a water jacket whose inner wall is made from a special UVC-transparent quartz material. The Lamp Produces a very strong spectral line at 254nm in the shortwave region, which is the waveband most lethal to micro organisms. The UV light shines powerfully through water passing along the unit. Destroying the cell DNA (or RNA in the case of viruses) making the micro organisms inactive. We use a stainless steel water chamber maximising full use of the available ultra-Violet energy, resulting in long exposure times and high doses and minimising UV light absorption into the chamber wall.

Saved by uncleflo on December 20th, 2018.

Richard and Roz Smith seem rather surprised to find themselves on board their Oyster 56, bobbing gently on a pontoon at Shamrock Quay, Southampton. It is the boat they have been refitting for the past nine months ahead of a “four-or-five-year” circumnavigation. They are surprised in part because the long, expensive fit-out work is finally drawing to a close (although there are winch bits on the saloon table and air-con ducting protruding from the panelling). But also surprised to be taking off for such an ambitious trip by themselves.

The Club was founded in 1972 on Queen Mary Reservoir which was originally built between 1919 and 1924. We are very proud of our rich heritage as a top racing venue, the home of the iconic Bloody Mary as well as a friendly members Club with a firm place in the local community. The plans for building the reservoir were originally concieved in 1912 when it was first thought that two would be built. These were subsequently altered with the bund (or baffle) put in place to promote water circulation from inlet to outlet. This measure was considered to be important to promote the purity of the water prior to the introduction of chlorination in 1916. The reservoir was completed on Dec 31st 1924 and opened by King George V on June 12th 1925. It has a surface area of 707 acres and has a capacity of 6,700 million gallons. The length of the perimeter is nearly four miles and the City of London could easily be accommodated in it. Click here for more details.

Best Cruising Catamaran

Saved by uncleflo on September 14th, 2018.

Another category that showcased great diversity in design and execution was the cruising cats. The HH 55 from China unanimously claimed the prize. In this unusual Boat of the Year fleet, the Best Cruising Catamaran class was yet another category made up of three boats that were very different in terms of size and execution: the 38-foot Maine Cat 38, the 47-foot Fountaine Pajot Saona 47 and the 55-foot HH 55. All three addressed their respective stated purposes very well, once again leaving the judges a challenging task in sorting out a winner. “We’ve got small, medium and large in this class,” said Bill Bolin. Starting with the smallest of the three, the Maine Cat 38 was, according to its entry form, “a performance cruising multihull designed to be fast, comfortable and easy to singlehand from a central weather-protected helm with excellent 360-degree visibility.” Built of thermoformed Corecell-infused polyester resin, it was one of the highest of high-tech boats in the entire contest.

Designing the MJM 50z

Modern construction, smart design, and practical engineering keep the new MJM 50z at the top of her game, and ready to make her owners very happy. Commercially driven industrial design often breeds a certain level of ennui, because the results frequently look remarkably similar. We can’t blame the designers or the manufacturers. They merely have responded to the public’s whims and fancies, which can make or break any new product. The MJM 50z, on the other hand, has a distinctive personality, derived in equal measure from CEO Bob Johnstone’s knowledge of which features mean the most to the owners—ease of use, comfort, and pride of ownership—and Doug Zurn’s artful rendering of those features.

Surfboard Hull Design

http://www.minisimmonssurfboards.com/surfboard-hull-design/

Saved by uncleflo on September 14th, 2018.

I have been wondering about this a lot in Mini Simmons surfboard design (surfboard design in general)—what is a hull and how does it influence the board and the ride? Two factors are at work when a planing surfboard is in motion: the propulsion power, or force, that creates forward motion (the wave energy); the resistance that opposes it (your fat ass standing on the board). When at rest, a surfers weight is borne entirely by the buoyant force (also depending on how much beer you drank the night before). At low speeds every hull acts as a displacement hull, meaning that the buoyant force is mainly responsible for supporting the surfer. As speed increases, hydrodynamic lift increases as well. Ok, you got to reach back to some physics for this one.
