ISO 12233 Test Chart

https://stephen-westin.com/misc/res-chart.html

Saved by uncleflo on January 6th, 2019.

In 2000, the International Standards Organization adopted ISO Standard 12233: Photography -- Electronic still-picture cameras - Resolution measurements for the measurement of camera resolution. This standard is protected by copyright, but the design of the associated test chart seems not to be protected; its description has been available on the Web in an Excel spreadsheet. I have semi-manually converted this to an Adobe Illustrator file which is displayed here. In 2014 and again in 2017, the ISO revised the standard and the chart below was replaced by several new ones. Those new charts are not available here. In principle, you should be able to print this chart and perform resolution tests on your camera. The reality isn't that simple; there are lots of subtleties having to do with focus distance, quality and contrast of your printer, evenness of illumination, surface reflections, etc.

Wind Turbine Design

https://learnengineering.org/wind-turbine-design/

Saved by uncleflo on November 28th, 2018.

Primary objective in wind turbine design is to maximize the aerodynamic efficiency, or power extracted from the wind. But this objective should be met by well satisfying mechanical strength criteria and economical aspects. In this video we will see impact of number of blades, blade shape, blade length and tower height on wind turbine design. The next big factor which is affecting performance of wind turbine is shape and orientation of blade cross section. A moving machine experiences fluid flow at a different velocity than the actual velocity. It is called as relative or apparent velocity. Apparent velocity of flow is difference between actual flow and blade velocity. Absolute velocity of the flow is shown in first figure, while apparent velocity in the second figure. It is clear that apparent velocity of flow is vectorial difference between actual and blade velocity. The vector difference is shown in the first figure at a particular cross section. A rotating blade will experience an apparent velocity of flow.

Data Warehousing Summary Tables

https://mariadb.com/kb/en/library/data-warehousing-summary-tables/

Saved by uncleflo on June 27th, 2018.

This document discusses the creation and maintenance of "Summary Tables". It is a companion to the document on Data Warehousing Techniques. The basic terminology ("Fact Table", "Normalization", etc) is covered in that document. Summary tables are a performance necessity for large tables. MariaDB and MySQL do not provide any automated way to create such, so I am providing techniques here. (Other vendors provide something similar with "materialized views".) When you have millions or billions of rows, it takes a long time to summarize the data to present counts, totals, averages, etc, in a size that is readily digestible by humans. By computing and saving subtotals as the data comes in, one can make "reports" run much faster. (I have seen 10x to 1000x speedups.) The subtotals go into a "summary table". This document guides you on efficiency in both creating and using such tables.

3 Biases That Hijack Performance Reviews, and How to Address Them

https://hbr.org/2018/06/3-biases-that-hijack-performance-reviews-and-how-to-address-them

Saved by uncleflo on June 22nd, 2018.

When we talk about bias, we often tie it to acts of discrimination or prejudice. But according to cognitive science, everybody, by virtue of having a brain that’s constantly seeking efficiency, is biased in some way — and not all biases make us actively malicious. The key is how we manage our biases. While biases can affect any of an organization’s talent decisions, they can be especially harmful when it comes to diversity and inclusion efforts. And there is perhaps no setting that shapes careers, salaries, and lives like annual performance evaluations. In a recent performance management summit we ran with over 100 large organizations, 57% of them said they weren’t taking any actions to address bias in performance reviews. One reason why may be a lack of shared language: In order to address biases, you first have to be able to label them. Research has found that several biases come up again and again when managers are evaluating a team member.

Quora - What is the best JS, CSS, HTML, and PHP minifier?

https://www.quora.com/What-is-the-best-JS-CSS-HTML-and-PHP-minifier

Saved by uncleflo on June 1st, 2018.

JavaScript: I’d rate Google’s Closure Compiler as the best, and UglifyJS second. There isn’t much data out there comparing them, especially the current or recent versions of them, but Closure gets lots of attention from talented people and its minification is guided by smart optimizations. In that sense, it’s a true compiler, doing things like dead code elimination and some restructuring. CSS: CSSO and CSS Nano are both good. CSSO was created by Yandex, and I’m generally impressed with Yandex’s talent. (They’re the Google of Russia, sort of.). HTML: As far as I know, there isn’t a good HTML minifier right now. WebMarkupMin might be good, but it’s new and I haven’t tested it. The most popular is HTML Minifier, but it’s buggy, poorly documented, and unsafe – it can easily break your website, and they’re strangely unwilling to fix their bugs (see this bug). A golang minifier deletes the `<html>` and `<head>` tags, which is fascinating. For some reason HTML minifiers seem to be in the hands of people who are willing to take alarming risks with HTML – it’s a weird bubble in the universe. We could really use a focused project to build a reference HTML minifier, and I’ve asked Cloudflare to open-source theirs (but I have no idea if they will).
