Waterfall model - Wikipedia

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Waterfall_model

Saved by uncleflo on January 18th, 2019.

The waterfall model is a relatively linear sequential design approach for certain areas of engineering design. In software development, it tends to be among the less iterative and flexible approaches, as progress flows in largely one direction ("downwards" like a waterfall) through the phases of conception, initiation, analysis, design, construction, testing, deployment and maintenance. The waterfall development model originated in the manufacturing and construction industries; where the highly structured physical environments meant that design changes became prohibitively expensive much sooner in the development process. When first adopted for software development, there were no recognized alternatives for knowledge-based creative work.

An Introduction to Lean Canvas – Steve Mullen – Medium

https://medium.com/@steve_mullen/an-introduction-to-lean-canvas-5c17c469d3e0

Saved by uncleflo on January 4th, 2019.

As an entrepreneur, one of the most important tasks you can perform is getting your idea(s) out from your head into a tangible format so that you can communicate that with others. In the past, this usually meant a well-researched business plan, that would usually take weeks (more like months) to create. I turn to the Lean Canvas to help me quickly formulate possible business models, product launches, campaigns and variations of, and communicate this with my stakeholders for my Lead Flow Method work. Having the Lean Canvas as a visual guide made this part “communicating the model/idea” so much more effective — and I think the most valuable function of the tool. The problem with business plans for startups & entrepreneurs are that they’re a waste of time, don’t get me wrong a well-researched business plan is important but only at the right stage of your business (usually when you’re in growth/investment). This quote from Steve Blank sums up this point in case: “Business Plan: a document investors make you write, that they don’t read”. The key fundamental to Lean methodology is the elimination of waste — this includes time, processes, inventory and more. So as a lean startup you need a quicker way to get ideas out of your head, you need to stay lean & avoid waste — so, it’s time to introduce Lean Canvas.

tf–idf - Wikipedia

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Tf%E2%80%93idf

Saved by uncleflo on December 23rd, 2018.

In information retrieval, tf–idf or TFIDF, short for term frequency–inverse document frequency, is a numerical statistic that is intended to reflect how important a word is to a document in a collection or corpus. It is often used as a weighting factor in searches of information retrieval, text mining, and user modeling. The tf–idf value increases proportionally to the number of times a word appears in the document and is offset by the number of documents in the corpus that contain the word, which helps to adjust for the fact that some words appear more frequently in general. Tf–idf is one of the most popular term-weighting schemes today; 83% of text-based recommender systems in digital libraries use tf–idf. Variations of the tf–idf weighting scheme are often used by search engines as a central tool in scoring and ranking a document's relevance given a user query. tf–idf can be successfully used for stop-words filtering in various subject fields, including text summarization and classification. One of the simplest ranking functions is computed by summing the tf–idf for each query term; many more sophisticated ranking functions are variants of this simple model.

Artisan Foundry Shop

https://www.artisanfoundry.co.uk/

Saved by uncleflo on October 8th, 2018.

The business was founded in 2006 working from our home workshop. The core business was the manufacture of one off custom and client specific designed house name and number plates, using the traditional greensand casting technique. Most of our signs are made from cast aluminium which is then powder coated in a durable plastic finish prior to being painted by our resident artist in weather proof enamel paints. We also cast in brass, bronze or copper for those clients who require it. Being close to The Liverpool John Lennon Airport means we are located centrally in the UK and can easily source materials and equipment for the foundry industry. Due to this enhanced position expansion came quickly and easily. The move into supplying foundry products to artisan crafts people, artists, potters, sculptors, jewellers and model engineering came in 2007 after being approached with numerous requests for materials in viable quantities to meet their needs. Our website www.artisanfoundry.co.uk quickly followed with a limited number of products which has now grown to supply a comprehensive portfolio of products to the United Kingdom as well as many European Countries.

Saved by uncleflo on June 29th, 2018.

In this post I present the development model that I’ve introduced for some of my projects (both at work and private) about a year ago, and which has turned out to be very successful. I’ve been meaning to write about it for a while now, but I’ve never really found the time to do so thoroughly, until now. I won’t talk about any of the projects’ details, merely about the branching strategy and release management.

IOTA - The Backbone of IOTA is Here - Scalable, Decentralized, Modular, No Fees

https://iota.org/

Saved by uncleflo on February 11th, 2018.

As the Internet-of-Things keep expanding, the need for interoperability and sharing of resources become a necessity. IOTA enables companies to explore new business-2-business models by making every technological resource a potential service to be traded on an open market in real time, with no fees. In this new autonomous Machine Economy IOTA will be the backbone. The Tangle ledger is able to settle transactions with zero fees so devices can trade exact amounts of resources on-demand, as well as store data from sensors and dataloggers securely and verified on the ledger. The main innovation behind IOTA is the Tangle, a revolutionary new blockless distributed ledger which is scalable, lightweight and for the first time ever makes it possible to transfer value without any fees. Contrary to today’s Blockchains, consensus is no-longer decoupled but instead an intrinsic part of the system, leading to decentralized and self-regulating peer-to-peer network. Read our Whitepaper.

Saved by uncleflo on December 27th, 2017.

The OSGi Alliance, formerly known as the Open Services Gateway initiative, is an open standards organization founded in March 1999 that originally specified and continues to maintain the OSGi standard. The OSGi specification describes a modular system and a service platform for the Java programming language that implements a complete and dynamic component model, something that does not exist in standalone Java/VM environments. Applications or components, coming in the form of bundles for deployment, can be remotely installed, started, stopped, updated, and uninstalled without requiring a reboot; management of Java packages/classes is specified in great detail. Application life cycle management is implemented via APIs that allow for remote downloading of management policies. The service registry allows bundles to detect the addition of new services, or the removal of services, and adapt accordingly.

State-space representation

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/State-space_representation

Saved by uncleflo on June 23rd, 2017.

In control engineering, a state-space representation is a mathematical model of a physical system as a set of input, output and state variables related by first-order differential equations. "State space" refers to the Euclidean space in which the variables on the axes are the state variables. The state of the system can be represented as a vector within that space. To abstract from the number of inputs, outputs and states, these variables are expressed as vectors. Additionally, if the dynamical system is linear, time-invariant, and finite-dimensional, then the differential and algebraic equations may be written in matrix form. The state-space method is characterized by significant algebraization of general system theory, which makes it possible to use Kronecker vector-matrix structures. The capacity of these structures can be efficiently applied to research systems with modulation or without it. The state-space representation (also known as the "time-domain approach") provides a convenient and compact way to model and analyze systems with multiple inputs and outputs. With {\displaystyle p} p inputs and {\displaystyle q} q outputs, we would otherwise have to write down {\displaystyle q\times p} q\times p Laplace transforms to encode all the information about a system. Unlike the frequency domain approach, the use of the state-space representation is not limited to systems with linear components and zero initial conditions.

Data Consistency for P2P Collaborative Editing

https://hal.archives-ouvertes.fr/file/index/docid/108523/filename/OsterCSCW06.pdf

Saved by uncleflo on June 21st, 2017.

Peer-to-peer (P2P) networks are very efficient for distributing content. We want to use this potential to allow not only distribution but collaborative editing of this content. Existing collaborative editing systems are centralised or depend on the number of sites. Such systems cannot scale when deployed on P2P networks. In this paper, we propose a new model for building a collaborative editing system. This model is fully decentralised and does not depend on the number of sites.

Saved by uncleflo on February 22nd, 2015.

URL Routing means that you when click on a link, instead of being routed to another page, you stay on the same page and the content changes. When this happens, usually a “hash” will be appended to your current URL so that the user can go directly to the content they need as well as using back and foward buttons in the browser. URL routing is a foundation of almost any single page web application. Sammy.js is a very simple library for doing just that, and I will provide a simple example of how to use it at the end of this article.

Saved by uncleflo on January 20th, 2015.

This article provides a simple positive model for preventing XSS using output escaping/encoding properly. While there are a huge number of XSS attack vectors, following a few simple rules can completely defend against this serious attack. This article does not explore the technical or business impact of XSS. Suffice it to say that it can lead to an attacker gaining the ability to do anything a victim can do through their browser. Both reflected and stored XSS can be addressed by performing the appropriate validation and escaping on the server-side. DOM Based XSS can be addressed with a special subset of rules described in the DOM based XSS Prevention Cheat Sheet. For a cheatsheet on the attack vectors related to XSS, please refer to the XSS Filter Evasion Cheat Sheet. More background on browser security and the various browsers can be found in the Browser Security Handbook.

American Institute of Steel Construction, Founded 1921 - There's always a solution in steel

https://www.aisc.org/

Saved by uncleflo on September 2nd, 2014.

When we started working on the project, we used a lot of cutting edge tools, especially in terms of 3-D modeling and the fabrication machinery used to execute this incredibly complex design. But since then, a funny thing has happened. What we thought was cutting edge has become the norm. However, when I tell this to people (even people in the steel industry), they initially look skeptical. They tell me steel is an old, mature, smoke-stack industry. But while steel has been the material of choice for construction for most of the past century, it doesn't mean it's not a modern industry with new technology (ranging from improvements in the properties of steel to better equipment and new communication and design tools). And fortunately, on September 19, you have a chance to see for yourself.
