The AgustaWestland Project Zero is a hybrid tiltrotor/Lift fan aircraft. It has been developed by AgustaWestland as a technology demonstrator, and is used to investigate all-electric propulsion and other advanced technologies. It is the world's first electric tiltrotor aircraft. In December 2010, AgustaWestland's management approved the formation of a team under James Wang with the intention of producing a technology demonstrator incorporating as many new innovations as possible on a single airframe. Speaking in 2013, Wang noted that electric technologies were rapidly advancing, and that the function of Project Zero was to achieve readiness with electric aircraft technologies: "Rather than waiting for the battery to become even better, then working on electric aircraft technology, the team has positioned itself to be ready for the next generation of batteries".

The heterogeneity in a composite material is introduced due to not only its bi-phase or in some cases multi-phase composition, but also laminations. This leads to a distinctly different stress strain behaviour in the case of laminates. The anisotropy caused due to fibre orientations and the resulting extension-shear and bending-twisting coupling as well as the extension-bending coupling developed due to unsymmetric lamination add to the complexities. A clear understanding of the constitutive equations of a composite laminate is thus desirable before these are used in analysis and design of composite structures. In this chapter, we first introduce to the readers the basic constitutive equations for a general three-dimensional anisotropic material with and without material symmetry, elastic constants and compliances and their relations to engineering constants, as well as transformation laws for elastic constants and compliances for both three and two-dimensional cases.

CARBON nanotubes are predicted to have interesting mechanical properties—in particular, high stiffness and axial strength—as a result of their seamless cylindrical graphitic structure1–5. Their mechanical properties have so far eluded direct measurement, however, because of the very small dimensions of nanotubes. Here we estimate the Young's modulus of isolated nanotubes by measuring, in the transmission electron microscope, the amplitude of their intrinsic thermal vibrations. We find that carbon nanotubes have exceptionally high Young's moduli, in the terapascal (TPa) range. Their high stiffness, coupled with their low density, implies that nanotubes might be useful as nanoscale fibres in strong, lightweight composite materials.

The treatment of torsion in most Mechanics of Materials textbooks is uneven. While circular cross sections are analyzed in detail (sometimes too thoroughly), the coverage of non-circular sections is typically relegated to “advanced material” covering 4-5 pages. (In this respect Beer-Johnston- DeWolf is somewhat better than Vable, who totally omits Open Thin Wall sections)

When I first mentioned that I wanted to build a homemade scratch built carbon fiber triathlon or Time Trial bike (TT Bike), my friends looked at me like I was crazy. They’re probably right but so far it hasn't killed me yet. And honestly, it’s a beautiful ride; smooth, light and comfortable. Of course I’m not the first that’s created a bike out of carbon fiber, but I am one of only a few that has done it out of their garage without the use of CNC machining and complex tooling methods. I opted for the plug and bag method- Which means I create a plug out of Styrofoam, wrap with carbon fiber and then vacuum-bagged it. I’ll explain more about the process later.

A) Geometry. I chose geometry that I knew I would like, based on bikes I've ridden. (For more information about how to choose frame geometry, see framebuild.htm.) This bike is a normal road bike: 59cm seat tube, 57cm top tube, average bottom bracket height, etc. To begin the full scale drawing, I plotted only the points required to hold the seat post, rear wheel, fork, etc. I did not draw any frame tubes yet. This bare bones geometry formed the skeleton. In the next section I describe how I fleshed it out. B) Shape. I designed a shape that is distinctive and appropriately proportioned for the loads I believe a bicycle experiences. I connected the dots from the geometry described above, thus fleshing out my skeleton. This is one of the parts I enjoyed the most: dreaming up all kinds of unusual shapes with which to make a bike. The combination of carbon or graphite fibers in a carbon or graphite matrix produces a material with unusual properties called a carbon-carbon composite. They are fabricated by multiple impregnation of porous "all carbon" frames or configurations which are then impregnated with a liquid carbonizable precursor (e.g., pitch) and pyrolyzed. Carbon-carbon composites can also be produced by chemical vapor deposition of pyrolytic carbon. The main advantages of carbon-carbon composites are their retention of useful properties up to 2760 °C (5000 °F). A foamed carbon-carbon composite has also been fabricated.
