Sailing Uma - THE MOTOR

https://www.sailinguma.com/the-motor/

Saved by uncleflo on February 24th, 2019.

Many people have written in and commented that an electric motor is only good for day sailors who weren’t going very far each day, and that you need a reliable diesel engine for long distance cruising. But we feel like the opposite is true. Since we don’t have a dock to tie up to and charge our batteries each night, we rely on sailing to recharge our system. The longer we sail and the more sun we get, the more power we make. Because we don’t have a 9-5 to return to at the end of a fun weekend out on the boat, we have no schedules requiring that we make it back to the dock on time, no matter what the wind is doing. So, we feel that an electric motor, depending on your sailing style, can be adapted to any boat. But, you have to be willing to work around the one major draw back, range.

Battle Born Batteries are made in Reno, Nevada – the Battle Born State. Our batteries are the height of lithium ion technology. We only use LiFePO4 (Lithium Iron Phosphate) in our packs, this is the safest and most reliable chemistry of lithium ion available. They outperform and outlast all other batteries in their class and below their class (lookin’ at you, lead acid batteries). The best part? They’re easy on the planet and your wallet. Green energy is not a trend to us. It’s not a marketing ploy to exploit for sales. We make our renewable, sustainable green energy batteries because they’re simply better than anything else out there, including other green batteries. Compare the specs on our batteries to that grungy, lead acid one in your vehicle and it’s easy to see. Our batteries weigh less, last for more cycles, and they’re made from 100% safe, non toxic, renewable energy that can be charged and discharged over and over again (at a faster rate than any other battery). Not to mention the unbeatable price.

Displacement-Length Ratio of a Yacht: Skipper's Basics – no-frills-sailing.com

http://no-frills-sailing.com/displacement-length-ratio-sailing-yacht-dl-r-ratio/

Saved by uncleflo on February 24th, 2019.

When sailors are talking about their boats they often refer to ratios and numbers. That´s a tendency in human behaviour to try to generalize things to make them comparable. Of course, everybody knows that you cannot really describe apple to pears and so it´s worthless to describe a let´s say Seventies IOR-era King´s Cruiser 33 like mine to a modern day cruising yacht but we nevertheless tend to do so. The Displacement-Length-Ratio in general is a non-dimensional number. It sets into relation the displacement of a boat (expressed in pounds) to the length of her waterline (in feet). So, in general, this ratio is looking for the relation between the (heavy?) volume of water being pushed aside by a boat´s hull and the length (and therefore speed potential see for my article Hull speed vs. Froude number here) of her hull. Sounds fair enough?

A well-designed sailing yacht is a thing of pure beauty, here are just 10 of the world’s finest… in my eyes at least! Velsheda
When she was launched in 1933, the J-Class yacht Velsheda represented the cutting edge of technology and sophistication and won races against all the great yachts of her day. However, she only was only used for three seasons and after World War 2 it looked as though none of these great yachts would ever sail again. King George V’s Britannia had already been scuttled south of the Isle of Wight, and Velsheda became a houseboat, firmly embedded into the River Hamble Mud for almost 50 years. In the 1970s she was saved from being cut up for scrap after being bought by a group of enthusiasts led by Bembridge bank manager Royce Pook. She then became the first of the class to be restored – in near original specification – thanks to Yorkshire scrap metal merchant Terry Brabant who bought her in 1984. Further refits after Brabant’s ownership saw her refurbished into the spectacular luxury yacht we see today.

Sailing Uma - Our Boat

https://www.sailinguma.com/our-boat

Saved by uncleflo on February 23rd, 2019.

They say a journey of a thousand miles, begins with a single step. For us, rather than a step, our journey began with a leap. We sold everything we didn’t need, cars, computers, motorcycles, furniture — everything. What we couldn’t sell, we donated and we used the money to buy a sailboat. Our boat “Uma” is a 1972 Pearson 36. She is neither fancy and expensive, nor cheap and flimsy—to us, she is perfect. We wanted a name that carried with it the motivation and rational that led us to buy her in the first place. Her name was inspired by the Portuguese number 1 (uma), meaning first or primary. Electric Boats, In General

http://www.growleymonster.com/eboat/eboatsgeneral.html

Saved by uncleflo on February 23rd, 2019.

Have you just bought an old sailboat with a dead or dying engine? You might have a boat worth less than a third of what a new diesel would cost, and you don't want to buy a used engine and inherit someone else's cast-off problems. Or maybe you are tired of smelling fuel, buying fuel, spilling fuel, running out of fuel, or hearing a smoke belching valve clattering clankasaurus hard at work, or crossing your fingers and hoping it will start when you actually need it. There are a lot of reasons to repower with electric drive. Electric is not for everyone. It has a lot of cons to balance out the obvious pros. But one con that is widely diseminated by self proclaimed experts is that it is expensive, and that is not necessarily the case at all. It is quite possible to replace that cranktankerous old infernal combustion engine very cheaply indeed. I did it, for less than $2500. I didn't know it at the time, but I could have spent even less.

Lot's Ait - Boatyard on the Thames

http://www.lotsait.com/

Saved by uncleflo on February 23rd, 2019.

Lots Ait Boatyard is situated on an island in the river Thames between Kew Gardens and Brentford. An important part of London's commercial boating history, it was one of the last tidal boatyards to be closed in the early 1970's. Thanks partly to its island location, Lots Ait avoided re-development and has remained very much as it was left over 30 years ago with weeds and undergrowth hiding the vintage boat sheds and machinery that were formerly a hive of activity. John Watson, owner of John's Boat Works Ltd says "I have a lifelong passion for traditional boatbuilding and our great boating heritage, so having the opportunity to be involved in reopening Lots Ait boatyard is a dream come true. The revitalised boatyard will provide a fantastic boatbuilding and repair resource on the Thames for boat owners and enthusiasts and will also provide an opportunity for a new generation of craftsmen and women to experience and acquire traditional and modern boatbuilding and restoration skills."

How to Keep Polished Brass From Tarnishing - Hunker.com - By Brenda Priddy

Saved by uncleflo on February 23rd, 2019.

Brass will automatically start to tarnish if exposed to oxygen. The only way to prevent polished brass from tarnishing is to coat it with a layer of clear sealer that will prevent air from reaching the brass itself. Many brass surfaces come with this finish originally, but it can wear down over time. Refresh the coating every few years to keep the brass shiny and like-new without frequent polishing. A clear polyurethane sealer will protect the brass from oxygen exposure without causing discoloration.

What You Need to Know About Watermakers - Sail Magazine

Saved by uncleflo on January 4th, 2019.

With a watermaker aboard, the days of rationing freshwater can come to an end! Photo by Discovery Yachts Water may be essential to life, but it can also be a pain aboard a sailboat. For one thing, it weighs a tremendous amount, and tankage can take up a good deal of space, especially aboard a smaller cruising boat. Water tanks can also be a pain to top off, especially in a remote foreign port. Not only do you often have to pay for the stuff, but there is the fear of its containing both organic and inorganic contaminants. Fortunately, in recent years sailors have been able to enjoy the benefits of modern watermakers that in many ways do for water stowage what GPS did to navigation: make a whole world of problems go away with the push of a button. That said, like GPS, watermaker technology is not entirely a no-brainer. In addition to taking care of your system—running and rinsing it regularly, pickling it with biocides if you can’t, and changing the filters regularly according to the manufacturer’s recommendations—it’s important to recognize that despite their similarities, there are also some basic differences between the many models on the market that have important implications in terms of how they are operated.

Removes all particles above 5 micron from the water supply this includes metals and general water sediment. 2nd Stage carbon water filter (life Span 6 months Approx). Removes, Herbicides, Pesticides, Trihalomethanes, Chlorine, Organic Chemcals, lead and aluminium. 3rd Stage 1 Micron Polypropylene water filter (life Span 6 months Approx). Removes all particles above 1 micron from the water supply this includes any remaining water sediment. 4th stage Membrane 50 gpd (life Span 18 months Approx). The membrane creates the finest filtration, the treated water is forced through the membrane and any un-pure water is discarded this is generally around 75 – 80% allowing through just pure filtered ater to enter the pressurised holding tank. 5th Stage In Line Activated Carbon water Filter (life Span 6 months Approx). Once the faucet is opened the water goes through a final carbon water filter that effectively polishes the water prior to your consumption. Six Stage Ultra Violet Filtration. our UV systems employ a low pressure mercury vapour discharge lamp surronded by a water jacket whose inner wall is made from a special UVC-transparent quartz material. The Lamp Produces a very strong spectral line at 254nm in the shortwave region, which is the waveband most lethal to micro organisms. The UV light shines powerfully through water passing along the unit. Destroying the cell DNA (or RNA in the case of viruses) making the micro organisms inactive. We use a stainless steel water chamber maximising full use of the available ultra-Violet energy, resulting in long exposure times and high doses and minimising UV light absorption into the chamber wall.

Water systems - Jones Boatyard

Most enclosed boats will have some kind of water system on board, ranging from a single manual pump operated tap to a system featuring hot and cold water with mixer taps and showers. Marine plumbing can be a daunting subject but most pleasure craft designed for river use have surprisingly similar water systems and understanding the function of just a few key common components can really help to gain a good understanding of marine plumbing. Unlike domestic plumbing where water pressure is generally created by gravity, boats require an electric pump to generate water pressure as tanks are often level with or below the outlets they serve. The pump is therefore the heart of the system and works by cycling on and off to maintain the desired pressure and a good flow when you open a tap. Most pumps are switched on and off automatically via a pressure switch inside the pump, though some smaller pumps rely on micro switches within the taps themselves. Pumps do differ in the pressure they provide (usually in PSI) and the flow rate (usually in GPM or LPM). The size of your boat, the number of outlets the pump will serve and the complexity of the water system will dictate which pump you will need.

Travelling around London is a little harder today. With a tube strike on, the roads are clogged with traffic jams, and the pavements are full of stressed and late commuters. How did we cope before roads and railways? Is there another network, criss-crossing through the capital? Well, yes, there’s always the waterways. Sadly, unlike Venice, London doesn’t use this network for most commutes these days (the towpaths are typically more popular than the waterways themselves), although a few more people than normal will be trying out the Thames Clipper boats today.

Living on a houseboat in London: living on the water is no longer an alternative lifestyle choice as Londoners look to rivers and canals for better value homes. Londoners looking for a central home on a budget are hitting the water — and avoiding stamp duty in the process. The number of Londoners resorting to living on boats has rocketed — with many driven off dry land by the high price of conventional homes. The number of boats registered to be moored on London waterways has increased by nearly 60 per cent in the past five years to almost 4,000, according to latest figures from the Canal & River Trust, which manages 100 miles of canals in the capital including the Grand Union and Regent’s Canals. Many other floating households are in private marinas or at moorings along the Thames.

London housing crisis extends to the water

https://edition.cnn.com/2016/07/26/world/london-water-crisis/index.html

Saved by uncleflo on December 20th, 2018.

London vies with Hong Kong and Monaco for the unenviable title of the world's most expensive city for housing. The average house price in the English capital is now nearly £600,000 ($787,000), and a study from the charity Shelter found just 43 properties affordable to people on an average income. Several of these properties were houseboats. Life on London's 100-mile network of canals, or 42-mile stretch of the River Thames, has become a popular option for beleaguered citizens, and such homes can cost as little as £20,000 ($26,500). But as more people swap apartments for houseboats, the popular, romantic vision is giving way to a harsh reality.
