Linux Daemon Writing HOWTO

http://www.netzmafia.de/skripten/unix/linux-daemon-howto.html

Saved by uncleflo on January 4th, 2019.

A daemon (or service) is a background process that is designed to run autonomously, with little or not user intervention. The Apache web server http daemon (httpd) is one such example of a daemon. It waits in the background listening on specific ports, and serves up pages or processes scripts, based on the type of request. Creating a daemon in Linux uses a specific set of rules in a given order. Knowing how they work will help you understand how daemons operate in userland Linux, but can operate with calls to the kernel also. In fact, a few daemons interface with kernel modules that work with hardware devices, such as external controller boards, printers, and PDAs. They are one of the fundamental building blocks in Linux that give it incredible flexibility and power. Throughout this HOWTO, a very simple daemon will be built in C. As we go along, more code will be added, showing the proper order of execution required to get a daemon up and running.

word2vec - Google Code Archive

Saved by uncleflo on December 23rd, 2018.

This tool provides an efficient implementation of the continuous bag-of-words and skip-gram architectures for computing vector representations of words. These representations can be subsequently used in many natural language processing applications and for further research. The word2vec tool takes a text corpus as input and produces the word vectors as output. It first constructs a vocabulary from the training text data and then learns vector representation of words. The resulting word vector file can be used as features in many natural language processing and machine learning applications. A simple way to investigate the learned representations is to find the closest words for a user-specified word. The distance tool serves that purpose. For example, if you enter 'france', distance will display the most similar words and their distances to 'france', which should look like:

Official Themes from Bootstrap's creators. Customize and extend the world's most popular front-end framework. Themes built as frameworks: Each theme was designed as its own extended version of Bootstrap, built for a specific set of problems—dashboards, web apps, or marketing pages. To do this we've not only extended many of your favorite parts of Bootstrap, but also introduced dozens of completely new utilities, components, and plugins. Components and examples: Each theme features new components built to the same level of quality as Bootstrap and highlighted with several example pages. Tons of variables: Theme components inherit much of their style from variables, exactly like Bootstrap. Change a few values and the theme adapts. Source files and tools: Each Bootstrap theme includes all the source and compiled files you'll need, including npm and Gulp based build tools. From the Bootstrap Team: Bootstrap Themes are built by the team who created Bootstrap itself. Full-Stack Cloud Native Monitoring Strategies

http://realscale.cloud66.com/full-stack-cloud-native-monitoring-strategies/

Saved by uncleflo on December 27th, 2017.

It is the weekend, late at night, or first thing Monday morning and you receive the dreaded phone call or SMS: “The application is down! We need all hands to figure this out!” After spending hours trying to track down the issue by reviewing logs, looking at the currently deployed code, and hundreds of IM exchanges, you finally find it – someone deployed a patch to production late Friday and it broke an important part of your application. You have probably been there. While tracking down issues can be difficult for any application, cloud native applications are particularly difficult. Applications are deployed to multiple servers across any number of zones. Servers have been created and destroyed. And the amount of traffic you must handle makes it hard to read log files (even centrally managed log files). So, how do you solve the need for monitoring in a cloud native architecture? While every application’s needs are different, we must first understand the options available to us. This article provides an overview of the goals of monitoring and the types of cloud native monitoring available, to help provide some insight into monitoring your Realscale applications.

HAProxy

Saved by uncleflo on December 27th, 2017.

HAProxy is a free, very fast and reliable solution offering high availability, load balancing, and proxying for TCP and HTTP-based applications. It is particularly suited for very high traffic web sites and powers quite a number of the world's most visited ones. Over the years it has become the de-facto standard opensource load balancer, is now shipped with most mainstream Linux distributions, and is often deployed by default in cloud platforms. Since it does not advertise itself, we only know it's used when the admins report it :-) Its mode of operation makes its integration into existing architectures very easy and riskless, while still offering the possibility not to expose fragile web servers to the net. Each version brought its set of features on top of the previous one. Upwards compatibility is a very important aspect of HAProxy, and even version 1.5 is able to run with configurations made for version 1.0 13 years before. Version 1.6 dropped a few long-deprecated keywords and suggests alternatives. The most differenciating features of each version are listed below :

We provide examples of C code for aspects of RTP sender and receiver algorithms. There may be other implementation methods that are faster in particular operating environments or have other advantages. These implementation notes are for informational purposes only and are meant to clarify the RTP specification. The following definitions are used for all examples; for clarity and brevity, the structure definitions are only valid for 32-bit big-endian (most significant octet first) architectures. Bit fields are assumed to be packed tightly in big-endian bit order, with no additional padding. Modifications would be required to construct a portable implementation.

[PATCH] mv_sas: OCZ RevoDrive3 & zDrive R4 support (Linux SCSI)

In the OCZ RevoDrive3/zDrive R4 series, the "OCZ SuperScale Storage Controller" with "Virtualized Controller Architecture 2.0" really seems to be a Marvell 88SE9485 part, with OCZ firmware/BIOS. Developed and tested on OCZ RevoDrive3 120GB [PCI 1b85:1021] Should work on: - OCZ RevoDrive3 (2x SandForce 2281) - OCZ RevoDrive3 X2 (4x SandForce 2281) - OCZ zDrive R4 CM84 (4x SandForce 2281) - OCZ zDrive R4 CM88 (8x SandForce 2281) - OCZ zDrive R4 RM84 (4x SandForce 2582) - OCZ zDrive R4 RM88 (8x SandForce 2582) All of this because a friend recently bought a OCZ RevoDrive3 and was bitten by the lack of Linux support.

Optimizing Your C/C++ Applications, Part 2

http://developer.amd.com/documentation/articles/pages/7162004127.aspx

Saved by uncleflo on August 17th, 2011.

In high school, we learned that some mathematical operations are logically equivalent, as well as rules for transforming operations into easier-to-solve formats. But as programmers, we know that not all forms of a problem are computationally the same, because some can take advantage of particular programming languages or microprocessor features to reduce the clock cycles required for evaluation. Alan Zeichick concludes his by looking at tricks for ensuring data structure alignment and speeding up the evaluation of integer and floating-point math. In the first part of this series, we examined six ways to speed up C/C++ applications running on either 32-bit or 64-bit operating systems. Let's take a look at eight additional optimizations.

Optimizing Your C/C++ Applications, Part 1

http://developer.amd.com/documentation/articles/pages/6212004126.aspx

Saved by uncleflo on August 17th, 2011.

Sidebar: Know the Code. A code profiler can help determine which parts of your application should be optimized. You should always use a profiler both before and after optimization to see if your change actually made an improvement—with C/C++, you can never be sure if your hand-tuning methods are better than those of your optimizing compiler! The smart engineers at AMD have spent a lot of time identifying places where C/C++ developers can optimize code for best performance. Some of these optimizations might look familiar—they're generally great coding practice for any 32-bit or 64-bit platform or operating system. In fact, most of these suggestions are appropriate whether you're developing 32-bit or 64-bit apps. Others are specifically for 64-bit applications running on the AMD64 architecture. This article will look at six optimizations; Part 2 will examine eight more.
