You Don't Need jQuery!

Saved by uncleflo on April 7th, 2018.

Free yourself from the chains of jQuery by embracing and understanding the modern Web API and discovering various directed libraries to help you fill in the gaps. In this fifth installment of “You Don’t Need jQuery (anymore)”, I’m going to talk about dealing with events in the browser without jQuery. As always, each section will cover the jQuery approach, followed by a solution using the native Web API instead. After reading this post on events, you should be confident enough to deal with events in your own project without using jQuery. As I’ve mentioned (many times) before, this blog is not about bad-mouthing jQuery. jQuery is, without a doubt, ubiquitous in the world of web development. In the earlier days of web development, jQuery was required to smooth out the significant implementation differences and bugs found in various browsers when dealing with the DOM and the Web API as a whole. Also, the Web API was quite primitive at the time, in some respects, and jQuery helped to make development a bit more intuitive.

Create Bookmarklets - The Right Way

Saved by uncleflo on March 8th, 2018.

Bookmarkets can be defined as mini applications masquerading as tiny snippets of JavaScript awesomeness that reside in your browser and provide additional functionalities to a web page. Today, we're going to look into creating bookmarklets from scratch and on the way, some best practices to follow. They're not for the nerdy, in fact, they're pretty user-centric. We're always looking at ways to enhance our browsing experience, be it widespread or little known. Bookmarklets, I used to think, belonged to the latter - the bastion of super nerds. Much to my chagrin, I discovered that I was completely wrong about the topic. They're not for the nerdy, in fact, they're pretty user-centric, implement a lot of pretty neat functionalities and, just as people predicted, it's become a core part of the way I interact with the browser -- and the internet. Today, I'd like to walk you through developing bookmarklets implementing some nifty bookmarks. Yes, bookmarks. We'll be building more than one, albeit quite tiny ones. Intrigued? Let's get started!

HowTos/Network/IPTables - CentOS Wiki

Saved by uncleflo on September 12th, 2013.

CentOS has an extremely powerful firewall built in, commonly referred to as iptables, but more accurately is iptables/netfilter. Iptables is the userspace module, the bit that you, the user, interact with at the command line to enter firewall rules into predefined tables. Netfilter is a kernel module, built into the kernel, that actually does the filtering. There are many GUI front ends for iptables that allow users to add or define rules based on a point and click user interface, but these often lack the flexibility of using the command line interface and limit the users understanding of what's really happening. We're going to learn the command line interface of iptables.

How To Add Swap on CentOS 6 | DigitalOcean

Saved by uncleflo on September 12th, 2013.

Linux RAM is composed of chunks of memory called pages. To free up pages of RAM, a “linux swap” can occur and a page of memory is copied from the RAM to preconfigured space on the hard disk. Linux swaps allow a system to harness more memory than was originally physically available. However, swapping does have disadvantages. Because hard disks have a much slower memory than RAM, server performance may slow down considerably. Additionally, swap thrashing can begin to take place if the system gets swamped from too many files being swapped in and out.

Adding and Managing CentOS Swap Space - Techotopia

Saved by uncleflo on September 12th, 2013.

An important part of maintaining the performance of a CentOS Enterprise Linux system involves ensuring that adequate swap space is available comparable to memory demands placed on the system. The goal of this chapter, therefore, is to provide an overview of swap management on CentOS.

I do a lot of work with subdomains, managing them locally on my development and test machines has always been a bit of a pain. Going way back, I can remember manually editing the hosts file in system32\drivers\etc\ on Windows! On the Unix we have /etc/hosts. Unfortunately /etc/hosts doesn’t allow wildcard definitions for subdomains, so you have to manually specify each one.

Saved by uncleflo on June 20th, 2013.

How to add a user to the sudoers list? Beleive it or not, this is a fairly common question and in all reality the answer is quite simple. Adding a user to the sudoers list on a fully installed Linux system such as Debian is only possible via the command visudo.

Users and Groups - ArchWiki

Saved by uncleflo on June 20th, 2013.

This article describes how to manage user and group accounts. Whilst certain desktop environments provide graphical user/group management tools, they are not discussed here. Users and groups are used on GNU/Linux for access control. The superuser (root) has complete access to the operating system and its configuration; it is intended for administrative use only. Unprivileged users can use the su and sudo programs for controlled privilege escalation.

Suppose that you wanted an interface of sortable, tiled information that was responsive enough to reorganize itself to fit in the available screen space? You might start out towards this goal filled with consternation, asking yourself: “how would I even start thinking about how to make such a complicated thing?” Well, the good news is that you don’t really have to, thanks to a jQuery plugin called Isotope developed by David DeSandro of Metafizzy. Take a look at the Isotope website and try resizing your browser window. Note that the tiles will reorganize themselves to fill in the available space.

Topic: Open Firewall Ports

Saved by uncleflo on May 20th, 2013.

You will need to open port 3306 TCP in the Windows firewall or any third party firewall for all software so it can communicate with MySQL. The server should have port 3306 TCP open both inbound and outbound (if using Windows 7 or higher)
On the server you should open port 3306 TCP .......on the workstations you should allow the applications through the firewall.
Since Windows has different versions and ways to open the firewall we have included some of the most popular methods.

How to add CoverFlow Effect on your iPhone App – OpenFlow ‹ ObjectGraph Blog

Saved by uncleflo on May 16th, 2013.

The main criteria of this post is to help you add a cool effect called the “cover flow/open flow” effect to any of your iphone apps. This is cool in two ways actually. One it adds animation kind of effect to your app and the other, its very easy to build too. I got to learn about this effect when I was working on my “pianos” app where in i’ll have bunch of animals to select which would be displayed as a menu using this “cover flow” effect. Once a particular animal is selected your piano view for that animal comes up. My piano app will be out soon and you can check that out. The source for this post is the link displayed below.
